TRANSFORMASI KURIKULUM PAI DI ERA MERDEKA BELAJAR: ANTARA TANTANGAN DAN PELUANG

The transformation of the Islamic Religious Education (PAI) curriculum is a strategic necessity within the context of Merdeka Belajar (Freedom to Learn) and the demands of 21st-century education and Society 5.0. The traditional PAI curriculum, which is dominantly oriented towards memorization and normative approaches, is deemed insufficient to optimally foster students' adaptive character, creativity, and critical thinking skills. This literature review research aims to map the direction of PAI curriculum changes, identify the challenges and opportunities of implementing Merdeka Belajar, and formulate an adaptive PAI curriculum model that is holistic and contextual. The method employed is a systematic literature review of 20 recent scientific articles (2021–2025), including journals, policy documents, and comparative studies of PAI curriculum models. The thematic analysis focuses on the role of teachers as facilitators, the integration of digital technology, learning flexibility, and the strengthening of character based on local wisdom. The main findings indicate that effective transformation requires a paradigm shift from teaching to learning, mandatory integration of 21st-century skills into PAI material, and an emphasis on the formation of the Pancasila student profile grounded in spiritual values. This research offers a theoretical contribution by categorizing PAI transformation models within the Merdeka Belajar framework and provides a practical contribution in the form of strategic recommendations for policymakers and PAI teachers to realize a PAI curriculum capable of shaping students who are adaptive, creative, faithful, and prepared to face modern socio-technological dynamics.
